UMSL Topples Missouri Valley

Rivermen claim first victory 2-1

St. Louis, Mo. – University of Missouri-St. Louis claimed their first victory tonight at home against Missouri Valley, 2-1.

The Rivermen came out strong in the first half, but Missouri Valley was the first to score when Brandon Williams got a shot off on a break away. UMSL hung in there, however, out shooting the Vikings 10-5 in the first half. Their efforts were to no prevail and they went into the second half down by one.

The second half started the same as the first. The Rivermen were getting more shots on goal, but none in the net. Finally, their persistence came through when junior Mark Malloy (St. Peter’s, Mo./Francis Howell North) blasted one into the net. Sophomore Jeff Menke (St. Louis, Mo./Rosary) recorded the assist on the play and the game was now tied 1-1. Less then a minute later, 78:11, Menke would put one in as well when he took a corner kick that was deflected by a defender into the goal. The Rivermen held on to the lead for the remainder of the game to wrap up their first victory of the season.

UMSL is now 1-2 on the season and will be back in action Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at 7:00 on their home field.
