Stegman Scores Overtime Goal for Win

UMSL Wins Thriller 4-3

ST. LOUIS, MOJeff Stegman (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) scored the game winning goal with five seconds left in the first overtime period to give UMSL a 4-3 win over Southern Indiana in a game filled with late game excitement.

In the first half, neither team got many shots in the windy conditions and wet field. UMSL got on the board first when Jeff Stegman took the ball in the middle and passed to the left side to Allen Jujic (St. Louis, Mo./Afton) who scored the first goal of the game and a 1-0 UMSL lead at the half.

Southern Indiana came out in the second half and had all the early shots. The Screaming Eagles found the net and tied the game at the 63:38 mark on a goal from Duncan Bray. The Rivermen retook the lead as David Walters (Overland, Mo./Ritenour) lobbed as pass in the box to Dave Seckman (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) who got the header past the keeper for at the 70:17 mark for a 2-1 UMSL lead. The Rivermen then added to that lead on a goal from Jeff Stegman for a 3-1 UMSL lead with 15 minutes to play.

USI got back in the game quickly as Duncan Bray scored his second goal of the game to make it 3-2 at the 82:47 mark. Bray then struck again, recording his third goal of the game for a hat trick and knotted the game at 3-3. Bray drove through the defense to score at the 88:34 mark of the game. Later, with just 18 seconds left in the game, UMSL made a foul in the box to give the Screaming Eagles a penalty kick. Greg Henry took the penalty kick and bounced it off the post, and a rebound shot by Shawn Sloan was wide, forcing an overtime.

In the first overtime period, with time winding down, UMSL got a breakaway and with five seconds left in the first overtime period, Jeff Stegman found the back of the net for his second goal of the game and eighth of the year, giving the Rivermen the 4-3 win.

The Rivermen are now 5-3 on the season and 4-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. UMSL will have the weekend off before traveling to play at Rockhurst on Tuesday, October 8 at 3 pm.
