St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team jumped out to a quick lead against Brescia and never looked back, cruising to a 70-57 win over the Bearcats.

UMSL jumped out to a quick lead, leading 12-2 in the first three minutes of the game. Troy Slaten (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette) got the scoring started with a three pointer and he finished the run with a layup that gave the Rivermen a ten-point lead. Brescia would come back and cut the lead to three points before UMSL pulled away again. UMSL would score the final four points of the half and led 37-24 at the break. The Rivermen quickly pushed their lead up to 19 points in the opening minutes of the second half. Brescia would close the gap to 12 points at the 10:33 mark, but that was as close as the Bearcats would get the rest of the game as UMSL cruised to a 70-57 win.

UMSL was led by Troy Slaten with 18 points and six rebounds. David Ward (Maryland Heights, Mo./DeSmet) scored 16 points and tied his career high with nine rebounds in the win and Jonathan Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./Normandy) added 10 points. The Rivermen are now 3-0 on the season, the first 3-0 start for the team since the 2001-02 season. UMSL will play again on Saturday at 5 pm against Arkansas Tech.
