SIUE Spoils UMSL Homecoming

Rivermen Beat Lewis 82-79 in Double Overtime

St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team saw their homecoming game spoiled by SIU Edwardsville, falling 82-52 to the Cougars. Ike Attah (Port Harcourt, Nigeria) and Jonathan Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./Normandy) both led UMSL with 11 points each.

UMSL got off to a quick start, scoring the first four points of the game in the opening two minutes as Derrell Minner (New Madrid, Mo./New Madrid Central) and Joey Paul (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) got the first two buckets of the game. SIUE responded with 12 straight points over the next three minutes to take control of the game and never looked back. The Cougars quickly pushed the lead out to 14 points at 23-9 at the 11-minute mark before UMSL made a small run. The Rivermen went on an 8-2 run that cut the lead down to eight points, but that was as close as UMSL would get the rest of the game. The Cougars added to their lead, and pushed it out to a 23-point lead by halftime. SIUE started the second half with a three-pointer. UMSL would get it back down to a 23-point game after bucket by Derrell Minner at the 17:31 mark, but the Cougars scored the next seven points and took off from there, leading by as many as 32 points late in the game before taking the 82-52 victory.

UMSL was led by Ike Attah and Jonathan Griffin each with 11 points, and Sherome Cole added 10 points off the bench. The Rivermen shot just 25.0% from the field, hitting 14-of-56 from the field.

The Rivermen fall to 7-16 on the season and 4-13 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. UMSL will be home again next week when they host Lincoln on Wednesday at 7:30 pm, and then host Southern Indiana on Saturday at 3 pm.
