UMSL Races Past Eagles for Third Straight Win

Green Records Double-Double in UMSL Victory

St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball ran past Robert Morris (Ill.) on Tuesday night, racing to a 90-65 victory. The Rivermen capitalized on a pressing defense that created 25 turnovers as UMSL scored 48 points in the paint and 24 fast break points on the night. Aaron Green (St. Louis, Mo./Riverview Gardens) led UMSL with his first career double-double, getting 21 points and 10 rebounds.

UMSL got off to a slow start as Robert Morris led 15-14 12 minutes into the game before UMSL made a big run. The Rivermen reeled off a 14-2, as four different UMSL players scored during that stretch. Jonathan Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./Normandy) got things started with a three pointer, and Chris Mroz (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick) ended the run with another three pointer that gave UMSl a 28-17 lead with two minutes left in the half. Aaron Green added tip in basket at the buzzer as UMSL led 34-24 at halftime.

The Rivermen quickly pushed their lead out to 15 points in the opening eight minutes of the second half, as a three pointer by Aaron Green made it a 48-33 game. After a three-point play by Robert Morris, the Rivermen scored the next six points to led by 20 points at 56-36 with nine minutes remaining. UMSL used a pressing defense in that second half to extend the lead, and pushed it out to as many as 27 points at 88-61 in the closing minutes before the 90-65 final score.

Missouri-St. Louis was led by Aaron Green with his first career double-double, recording team highs of 21 points and ten rebounds. Jonathan Griffin added 15 points and four assists and Chris Mroz had 12 points. Ike Attah (Port Harcourt, Nigeria) had a solid game off the bench for UMSL, scoring nine points and pulling down seven rebounds on the night and Sherome Cole (Sikeston, Mo./Richland) added nine points, six rebounds and four assists. The Rivermen scored 24 fast break points on the night, capitalizing off the 25 turnovers by Robert Morris for 27 points off turnovers. UMSL dominated the inside game as well, scoring 48 points in the paint.

UMSL improves its record to 5-10 on the season while recording their third straight win of the season. The Rivermen will be at home again on Thursday night when they host Quincy at 7:30 pm.
