Griffin Named Second Team GLVC All-Conference Griffin Led Team in Scoring, Rebounding and Assists Evansville,
Ind. – UMSL’s Jonathan Griffin (St.
Louis, Mo./Normandy) was named to the Great Lakes Valley
All-Conference second team as voted on by league coaches, and becomes
the first UMSL men’s player to earn second team all-conference
honors since joining the GLVC in the 1996-97 season. Griffin,
a junior this year, also becomes the first UMSL player to earn GLVC
All-Conference honors since current assistant coach Deryn Carter and
Scott Kassell were both honorable mention selections in the 2001-02
season. Griffin had numerous big game performances this season, including 11 games with 20 or more points and five games with 30 or more points. He matched his career high when he scored 33 points in a home win against Lincoln. Griffin nearly recorded a triple double on a couple of occasions, the first in a road win at Lincoln when he had 31 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds. Those 12 assists were a career high and equaled the second highest assist total for a single game in UMSL history, trailing the record of 13 set by Bob Bone. In a game at Saint Joseph’s, Griffin came close a second time when he finished with 32 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Griffin nearly reached a triple double again in the final regular season game when he recorded 30 points, 12 rebounds and six assists in a loss at Northern Kentucky. This season, Griffin reached a career milestone with his 31 points in a win at Lincoln. In that game, he surpassed the 1,000 career point mark and moved into the top 10 in the UMSL all-time score list. Griffin currently ranks ninth on the all-time scoring list with 1,246 career points. In single season records, his 538 points scored this year is the second highest total ever for a junior at UMSL, and ranks as the seventh best single season scoring total in UMSL history. His 538 points this season and his 496 points that he scored last season, combine for 1,034 points in a two-year stretch and marks the second highest two-year point total in UMSL history, trailing only Hall of Famer Bob Bone.
