UMSL Basketball Moves to 1380 AM ESPN Radio

Rivermen Games to be Broadcast on 1380 AM

St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball program has announced that the games for the 2004-05 season will be broadcast live on 1380 AM ESPN Radio.

UMSL basketball will be moving stations for the first time in over 23 years, as Rivermen basketball games have been broadcast on WGNU 920 AM since the 1981-82 season. With changes in formats by various St. Louis radio stations, it provided an opportunity for the men’s basketball games to move to a more sports oriented station.

“We’ve had a great relationship with WGNU dating back to my playing days, but I think moving to 1380 ESPN Radio is a beneficial change for our basketball program,” said UMSL head coach Chris Pilz. “The name ESPN symbolizes sports and to have our basketball program associated with ESPN Radio will help get our games broadcast to a wider range of sports fans in the St. Louis area. Forming a new partnership with Dave Greene, the program director at 1380, will hopefully be a long term relationship that can provide benefits to both parties.”

The new move puts UMSL basketball on a recognizable station to St. Louis sports fans. 1380 ESPN Radio features national programming from ESPN radio, including Mike and Mike in the Morning and The Dan Patrick Show. Popular local programming includes The Manly Morning Show with Jeff Gordan and Dave Greene, and The Big Show in the afternoon with Malcolm Briggs and Howard Balzer.

The schedule calls for 26 of the 27 UMSL games to be broadcast live on 1380 AM ESPN Radio, with the Friday, November 26, home game against Saint Joseph’s to possibly be moved to another station. Mike Carver, who is entering his sixth season of broadcasting UMSL basketball, will once again be the voice of the Rivermen, calling the play-by-play action for all home games as well as a few road game. Scott Warmann, of 1380 ESPN Radio, will be broadcasting most of the conference road games this season for the Rivermen, as well as the season opening non-conference game on Monday, November 15, at Washburn beginning at 6 pm.
