Hawks Fly Past UMSL

Rivermen Fall to Quincy 73-59

St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team dropped a conference game to Quincy on Saturday night, falling 73-59.

In the first half, Quincy jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead in opening four minutes to take control early. The Hawks would push their lead out to 12 points at 21-9 at the 11:34 mark after a layup by Sam Sutera. On the next possession, the Rivermen got a three pointer from Justin Foust (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) to make it a nine-point deficit, but the Hawks came back to score the next seven points in the game. Quincy would eventually push their lead to as many as 25 points and led by 23 points, 43-20, at halftime.

The Rivermen came out charging to start the second half, jumping out with a 13-2 run in the first five minutes of the half. The Hawks came right back and pushed out to a 17-point lead at 52-36. UMSL did not give in, and came back with a 7-0 run, capped by a pair of Josh Hardin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) free throws to cut the Quincy lead down to just ten points at 52-42 with eight minutes remaining. The Hawks came soaring right back with the next eight straight points and went on for the 73-59 victory.

The Rivermen were led by Jonathan Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./Normandy) with 19 points on the night and Ronnie Banks (Birmingham, Ala./Phillips) added 15 points. Quincy was led by Cory Cummens with a game high 31 points and nine rebounds.

UMSL is now 6-11 on the season and 2-8 in the GLVC. The Rivermen will be in action again next week when they travel to play at Lewis on Thursday, January 29.
