Hawks Soar Past UMSL in Second Half

Rivermen Fall at Quincy 80-64

Quincy, Ill. – The Quincy Hawks used a big second half run to overcome the UMSL Rivermen on Thursday night, beating UMSL 80-64 in a GLVC matchup.

The first half was a back and forth battle as both teams fought to take control of the game. With the score tied at 19-19, the Hawks scored four straight to get the early advantage. The Rivermen fought back and tied the game at 31-31 after a free throw by Kevin Nordmann (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) with two minutes left in the half. The Hawks then came back with the last six points of the half to take a 37-31 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Quincy jumped out and increased their lead to nine points at 50-41 with 15 minutes left. The Rivermen then went on a three-point barrage, outscoring Quincy 12-2 over a one and a half minute stretch. During that run, UMSL got all their points from three pointers, getting one from Jonathan Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./Normandy) and three from Kevin Nordmann. That run closed the gap to just five points at 52-47. UMSL would stay within five points at 59-54 with 10:48 remaining when the Hawks used a 15-1 run over the next five minutes, limiting UMSL to just one free throw during that stretch to take control of the game. From there, QU would cruise for the 80-64 victory.

UMSL was led by Kevin Nordmann, who tied his career high with 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, including 4-of-7 from three-point range. Jonathan Griffin added 12 points and eight rebounds and Ike Attah (Port Harcourt, Nigeria) scored 10 points on the night, including nine in the second half, and six rebounds. Quincy had five players in double figures, led by Todd Lorensen with 15 points.

UMSL is now 9-15 on the season and drops to 5-12 in the GLVC. The Rivermen will be in action again on Saturday at SIU Edwardsville.
