| Quincy Beats UMSL 68-57 Rivermen Drop Tenth Straight in Loss to Hawks St. Louis, Mo. – The UMSL men’s basketball team dropped their tenth straight game Thursday night, falling 68-57 to visiting Quincy University. The Rivermen fell behind early and saw a couple of second half runs fall short in the loss. UMSL grabbed the early lead at 3-2 after a three pointer by Justin Foust. Quincy then reeled off nine straight points to take an 11-3 lead. The Hawks pushed the lead up to 15 points at 23-8 with 11:20 left in the half before the Rivermen went on a 7-0 run. That run was started by a three-point play from Daryl Saine, cutting the lead to 23-15 at the 8:20 mark. The Hawks then extended their lead to 18 points over the next five minutes, using a 12-2 run over that span to lead 35-17. UMSL would close the half with seven-straight points, six of those scored by Jonathan Griffin, to make it a 35-24 game at halftime. The Hawkscame out in the second half and scored the first eight points to lead 43-24 with 17 minutes remaining. Trailing by 13 points, 50-37, the Rivermen went on a 7-0 run which ended on a jumper by Ronnie Banks to make it a six-point game at 50-44 with seven minutes left in the game. Quincy would push their lead back out to ten points before UMSL got five straight, capped by a Sherome Cole jumper that made it 54-49 with five minutes remaining. The Rivermen would stay within five points, trailing 57-52 with just 2:31 to play in the game before the Hawks hit late free throws to hold on for the 68-57 victory. The
Rivermen were led by Jonathan Griffin and Ronnie Banks with 11 points
each, and Sherome Cole with 10 points off the bench. Quincy had four
players in double figures, led by Phil Gettinger and Jonathon Edmond
with 15 points each. UMSL is now 5-13 on the season and drops to 2-11
in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
