Four Rivermen in Double Figures in Win

St. Louis, Mo. – Larry Wells (Memphis, Tenn./Westwood) led four UMSL players in double figures, scoring 24 points, as the Rivermen defeated Harris Stowe 82-69 on Monday night. Jonathan Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./Normandy) also had a big game for UMSL, scoring 18 points and pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds for his first career double-double.

UMSL took control late in the first half, leading by as many as 11 points before going into halftime with a 33-24 advantage. In the second half, the Rivermen pushed their lead to as many as 18 points, 40-24, after two Larry Wells free throws with 18 minutes left to play. Harris Stowe then chipped away at the UMSL lead, cutting the deficit to just four points, 57-41, with 11:34 remaining. UMSL would respond, and pushed the lead back up to double digits at the ten-minute mark. The Hornets closed the gap again with under four minutes to play, cutting the UMSL lead to seven at 72-65, before the Rivermen scored six straight points to secure the win.

Larry Wells led all scorers with 24 points, and Jonathan Griffin added 18 points and 15 rebounds. Jo’Van Fisher (East St. Louis, Ill./Belleville Althoff) also had a double-double in his first game as a Rivermen, recording 11 points and pulling down 11 rebounds in the win.

UMSL improves to 1-1 on the season and will be in action again on Wednesday night with a home game against Illinois-Springfield at 7:45 pm.
