Southern Indiana Runs Past UMSL

Rivermen Fall In Conference Matchup

Evansville, Ind. – The UMLS men’s basketball ran into a hot Southern Indiana team that ran out to a big lead late in the first half to beat the Rivermen 85-61 in a GLVC matchup Thursday night.

The first half started out with a battle back and forth and both teams fought for control of the game. In the first 11 minutes, the two teams had six ties and three lead changes and were knotted at 17-17 after a bucket by UMSL’s Jonathan Griffin with nine minutes remaining in the half. Southern Indiana then took over the game at that point, going on a 13-2 run over the next five minutes to take a 30-11 lead with just under five minutes left in the half. USI pushed the lead up to as many at 13 points before UMSL got two straight baskets by Mindaugas Adamonis to cut the lead to single digits, but the Screaming Eagles came right back and hit a three pointer to end the half and take a 41-28 lead going into halftime.

In the second half, UMSL got on the board first with a bucket by Jonathan Griffin, making it a 41-30 game. At that point, Southern Indiana used a 16-4 run over the next nine minutes to increase their lead to 23 points, 57-34. From there, USI continued to run and push the lead to as many as 30 points at 75-45 before closing out the game with an 85-61 victory.

UMSL was led by Jonathan Griffin with 14 points and Mindaugas Adamonis off the bench with 13 points. Southern Indiana had four players in double figures, led by Diond’re Givens with 17 points and Clarence Chillers with 13 points and eight rebounds. USI dominated the battle on the boards, pulling down 39 boards to UMSL’s 26, including a 17-5 advantage on the offensive boards. The Rivermen are now 5-7 on the season and 2-5 in the GLVC.
