Lewis Pulls Away In Second Half

Flyers beat Rivermen 68-47

Romeoville, Ill. – The UMSL men’s basketball team falls short in second half to the Flyers of Lewis University 56-53 Saturday afternoon. UMSL trailed by nine points at the half, but Lewis pulled away in the second half for the victory.

The Flyers started strong in the first half, leading UMSL by seven points at the 13:50 mark. UMSL’s Quanzi Samuels (Somerdale, N.J./Sterling/Lebette) hit a jumper and Justin Foust (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) swished the three-pointer to get within two points. With 9:34 remaining in the half, Samuels gave UMSL the 13-12 lead on a layup. A few minutes later, Lewis tied the game a second time with 19:19 on the clock. The Flyers then sparked a 9-0 run to lead UMSL 33-22 at the half.

Lewis hit the first four points in the second half, leading in double digits after the 15:16 mark. UMSL got within 11 at the eight minute mark, but the Flyers continued to capitalize on offense and lead with 1:38 remaining. Lewis continues their home winning streak this season with their tenth win and still remain on top in the conference with a 56-53 victory.

UMSL was led by Justin Foust with 14 points, four of five from behind the arc and Quanzi Samuels grabbed 11 points on the afternoon. The Rivermen move to 5-11 overall and 2-9 in the GLVC. UMSL will host Quincy University this Thursday, January 30 at 7:45 pm.
