UMSL's Matt Tesson Named GLVC Player of the Week

St. Louis, Mo. – UMSL baseball player Matt Tesson (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North HS) was named Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week after helping lead the Rivermen to a 5-1 start on the season-opening trip to Florida.

In six games over the past week, Tesson hit .519 (14-for-27) from the plate, and knocked in 17 RBI in those six games, both team highs. He had a slugging percentage of .889 with two doubles, one triple and two home runs. Tesson had a team high 14 hits in the six games. He opened the season with a strikeout in his first at bat of the year, but failed to strike out in the rest of his 27 at bats on the week. Tesson went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI in the season opening win, and followed that with a 4-for-5 game with two runs, four RBI and his first home run of the year in another UMSL win.

The Rivermen then played three conference games against Northern Kentucky while in Florida, winning two of those three games thanks in large part to Tesson’s performance at the plate. In the second game of the series, he went 1-for-2 and had four RBI, knocking in all four UMSL runs in a 4-3 win. He had a two-run double in the third and drew a bases loaded walk to bring home the game-winning run in the bottom of the last inning. In the final game against Northern Kentucky, Tesson got UMSL off to a big lead with a grand slam home run in the third inning that gave the Rivermen a 4-1 lead at the time. The next inning, he added a two-run single and finished the game going 3-for-5 with six RBI. In the final game on the Florida trip, Tesson went 3-for-6 with two runs and one RBI.

UMSL got off to a 5-1 start to the season, including a 2-1 start in GLVC games on their season-opening trip to Florida. The Rivermen will be in action again on Wednesday when they play a doubleheader at Missouri-Rolla starting at 1 pm.
