UMSL Wins Conference Matchup 5-1 Over Lewis

St. Louis, Mo. – The UMSL baseball team beat Lewis 5-1 in a conference game on Sunday afternoon, taking all three weekend conference games against the Flyers. UM-St. Louis dropped a non-conference contest in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader, falling 1-0 in extra innings.

In the opener, Lewis got a run in the top of the first inning for the quick 1-0 lead. UMSL would get on the board in the fourth inning to take the lead. Steve Porter scored the first run on a double steal, and Matt Tesson gave UMSL the lead with an RBI double to score Adam Whitehead. Tesson would add the third run of the inning when he scored on an RBI single by Nico Greagli. The Rivermen would extend their lead with a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning on a two-run double by Nate Hartman for the 5-1 win. Derek Besonen picked up the win, going 5.0 innings and giving up one unearned run on four hits.

The second game of the doubleheader was a non-conference matchup and was pitcher’s dual. Neither team could score in the seven scheduled innings, but Lewis scored in the top of the eighth on an RBI double for the 1-0 win.

UMSL is now 11-5 on the season and is 8-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Rivermen will be on the road on Wednesday for a doubleheader at Drury.
