Starting Pitching Carries UMSL to Doubleheader Sweep

St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis baseball team used solid starting pitching to sweep a doubleheader from Lewis University, winning 4-0 and 12-2 in a pair of conference games on Saturday.

UMSL got a three-hit shutout from Mike Lantzy in the first game, as he went the distance and struck out five hitters while giving up just three hits, two of those in the last inning. UMSL scored all four runs in the third inning. Nico Gregali scored the first run on a throwing error by the Flyers. Steve Porter hit a two-run double and he later scored on an RBI single b Eric Kuntz for the 4-0 lead.

UMSL used a couple of big innings early in the second game to take control. The Rivermen got two runs in the top of the first, getting two walks to start the inning and a sacrifice fly from both Adam Whitehead and Matt Tesson for a quick 2-0 lead. UM-St. Louis then tacked on six runs in the third inning to open up a big lead. Steve Porter scored the first run of the inning after a wild pitch and Matt Tesson had a two-run single. Ryan Ayers added an RBI double later in the inning and he scored on a grounder by Jake Kelahan. UMSL would add a single run in the sixth for a 9-0 lead before Lewis got on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the eighth. The Rivermen added three more runs in the bottom half of the inning, getting another RBI hit by Matt Tesson for the 12-2 win. Kyle Hargis picked up the win, going 6.0 innings and giving up no runs on five hits while striking out three.

UMSL is now 10-4 on the season and 7-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Rivermen will be at home again on Sunday to host Lewis for another doubleheader beginning at 12 pm at GCS Ballpark.
