UMSL Wins One of Three Over Weekend on Walkoff Home Run by Adam Whitehead

The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team won one of three games in a weekend series against Bellarmine. The win came in Saturday's second game of a doubleheader as Adam Whitehead hit a walkoff home run in the bottom of the 13th inning for a 5-4 win.

Saturday, Bellarmine jumped out to a 4-0 lead with three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth in the first game. UMSL cut into that deficit with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, getting an RBI groundout from Adam Whitehead and an RBI single by Matt Tesson, but it was not enough in the 4-2 loss.

In Saturday’s second game, Bellarmine again got the quick lead with two runs in the second inning. UMSL got a run in the bottom half of the inning, getting a run on an RBI groundout by Corey Henley. The Knights added to their lead with a run in the fifth and another in the top of the eighth to lead 4-1. In the bottom of the eight, UMSL got a leadoff walk from Steve Porter and Adam Whitehead followed with his first home run of the year, a two-run shot that pulled UMSL within one at 4-3. After a groundout, Dan Fox stepped up and hit a solo homer to center, his first of the year, to tie the game at 4-4 and force extra innings. Neither team generated much offense in the extra frames, as UMSL had 13 straight batters retired from the ninth through the 13th innings. After the first batter in the bottom of the 13th struck out, Adam Whitehead hit his second home run of the game in the bottom of the 13th inning for a 5-4 UMSL win.

On Sunday, UMSL got a quick lead in the first inning as Steve Porter drew a leadoff walk and Eric Kuntz followed with his first home run of the season for a 2-0 UMSL lead. The Knights took over the scoring after that, scoring three runs in the third and four more in the fourth inning before adding four runs in the ninth for the 11-2 win.

UMSL is now 19-21 on the season and is 15-17 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. UMSL will be at Kentucky Wesleyan on Tuesday for a conference game and will then host Drury University on Wednesday, May 2, for a single conference game at 3 pm at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.
