UMSL Sweeps Doubleheader from Missouri-Rolla

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis baseball team swept a conference doubleheader at Missouri-Rolla on Wednesday, winning 6-2 and 11-8, improving their record to 7-1 on the season and 4-1 in the GLVC.

UMSL got single runs in the fifth and sixth inning of the first game as Matt Tesson hit an RBI single to score a run in the sixth. Missouri-Rolla came back and tied the game at 2-2 with two runs in the bottom half of the inning before UMSL took the lead in the last inning. Ryan Ayers hit a two-run triple to get the scoring started and later scored on a grounder by Steve Porter, who would score the fourth run of the inning on a double steal for the 6-2 UMSL win. Linds Prestia picked up the win in relief, going 1.1 innings and giving up no runs on just one hit and struck out two, improving his record to 2-0 on the year.

The Rivermen played from behind in the second game, giving up a run in the first, four in the second and another in the third inning to trail 6-0 after three. UMSL got a single run in the fourth inning before giving up runs in the fifth and sixth and trailed 8-1 going into the seventh inning. The UMSL bats then came alive, scoring ten runs in the seventh to open up a lead. Ryan Ayers had a bases loaded, two-run single to get the scoring started and Adam Whitehead had a two-run double later in the inning and Dan Fox added an RBI single. Cole Williams provided the big blow with a bases loaded, three-run double to left center and later scored on an RBI single by Ryan Gray that gave UMSL an 11-8 lead. The game was then called complete after eight innings due to darkness. Kent Wallace picked up the win in relief, going 4.1 innings and gave up two earned runs on seven hits and struck out five.

The Rivermen improve to 7-1 on the season and are 4-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and move into a tie for first in the conference standings. UMSL will be on the road this weekend to play at Quincy.
