UMSL Drops Weekend Series to Rockhurst

Kansas City, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis baseball team dropped a three-game, weekend series at Rockhurst in three close games that were all decided in the last innings.

In the first game on Friday, UMSL fell behind 2-0 after five innings before getting on the board in the sixth. Eric Kuntz had an RBI double to get UMSL on the scoreboard that inning, but Rockhurst added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Rivermen would add a run in the top of the seventh, but ended up losing the game 4-2.

The second game of Friday's doubleheader went extra innings, as the teams combined for seven runs in the tenth inning. UMSL got single runs in the first and fifth innings for the the early lead, getting an RBI single from Dan Fox in both innings for a 2-0 lead. Rockhurst got on the board with a run in the sixth when Dan Fox added a sacrifice fly for another UMSL in the in the seventh and a 3-1 lead for the Rivermen. Rockhurst took a one-run lead with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to lead 4-3. In the top of the ninth, UMSL would score twice, taking the lead at 5-4 on an RBI single by Mark Sanders. Rockhurst would get a single run in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. In the tenth, UMSL scored three runs, the last coming on an RBI single by Eric Kuntz to give UMSL an 8-5 lead. The Hawks then rallied in the bottom of the tenth to score four runs to secure the 9-8 win.

On Saturday, it was another last inning finish. Steve Porter led off the game with a single in the top of the first and scored on an RBI single by Adam Whitehead. In the fourth, UMSL got back-to-back singles to start the inning and got another run across the plate on a sacrifice fly by Dan Fox for a 2-0 lead. That lead would hold until the bottom of the ninth when the Hawks scored three runs to get the 3-2 win.

The Rivermen are now 15-10 overall on the season and fall to 11-8 in the GLVC. UMSL will be at home this week to host Southern Indiana on Wednesday for a doubleheader at GC Ballpark in Sauget, Ill., beginning at 5 pm.
