UMSL Wraps Up Quincy Series With a Win

Quincy, Ill. – The Missouri-St. Louis baseball team got a win in the final game of a weekend series at Quincy, winning 18-9 on Sunday. UMSL dropped the first three games of the series, losing a non-conference game 3-1 on Friday, and dropping a conference doubleheader on Saturday 16-6, and 1-0.

On Sunday, UMSL got a single run in the first but gave up two in the bottom half of the inning. The Rivermen regained the lead in the second, scroing three runs. Steve Porter had a two-run double and scored on an RBI single by Adam Whitehead to give UMSL a 4-2 lead. The Rivermen added a run in the fourth before the Hawks got two more in the bottom half of the inning making it a 5-4 UMSL lead after four. UM-St. Louis then went on a tear in the fifth, scoring nine runs to blow the game wide open. Steve Porter, Corey Henley and Nico Gregali each had RBI singles in the inning and Adam Whitehead had a two-run double. Scott Lavelock added a two-run single in the sixth inning to open up the lead even more. After Quincy scored twice in the seventh, UMSL got a two-run double from Bryan Smith in the eighth to add to the UMSL lead and secure the 18-9 win.

In Friday's non-conference game, it was scoreless through five innings when the Hawks scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, two of those unearned. UMSL would cut into the deficit in the eighth on an RBI ground out by Ryan Ayers, but the Rivermen offense was limited to just three hits in the game in a 3-1 loss.

Saturday's doubleheader saw the Hawks sweep UMSL, winning 16-6 and 1-0 in 11 innings. Quincy scored two runs in the first, five in the second and two more in the third for a quick 9-0 lead after three innings. UMSL get on the board with four runs in the top of the fourth. Nick Landzettel hit a bases loaded, two-run double to start the scoring, and Dan Fox added an RBI single later in the inning as well. Trailing 9-4, UMSL then gave up a seven-run inning to the Hawks in the fifth inning to open the game up. Adam Whitehead would knock in a run with an RBI single in the seventh as UMSL scored twice in that final inning before losing 16-6. In the second game, pitching dominated as the two teams combined for a total of six hits in an 11-inning, 1-0 win by the Hawks. UMSL had two hits in the game, both by Scott Lavelock. Mike Lantzy started and pitched 8.0 innings, giving up no runs on just four hits and struck out seven in a no decision. The scoreless tie was broken in the 11th inning as Quincy got an RBI single for the win.

The Rivermen are now 8-4 UMSL will be at home to face Missouri-Rolla on Tuesday at 5:00 pm, at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.
