UMSL Splits Doubleheader with Rangers

Rivermen Win Opening Game 3-1 With Strong Pitching

St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis baseball team split a doubleheader with Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday afternoon, winning the opening game 3-1 before losing in the second game 18-8.

In the opener, the Rivermen got strong pitching from Justin Laramie and Josh Morgan for the win. Laramie started the game and went 6.0 innings, giving up one run on three hits to improve to 2-1 on the season and Morgan pitched the seventh inning for his first save of the year. Jeff Luksza got the offense going in the first inning with a leadoff triple and later scored on a fielder's choice. In the fourth, UMSL would add to that lead, getting an RBI double by Scott Lavelock who then scored on an RBI double by Nico Gregali for a 3-0 lead. UWP would score their run in the fifth, but it was not enough as UMSL held on for the 3-1 win. In the second game, the Rangers came out quickly, scoring seven runs in the first inning to open up a big lead. UWP would add another run in the second and three in both the third and fourth innings. UMSL got an RBI double from Matt Tesson in the first inning and a two-run double by Tesson in the third inning. Tony Soaib added an RBI double in the fourth and scored on a base hit by Adam Whitehead, as UMSL trailed 14-4 after four innings. UWP would add four more runsi n the seventh and UMSL scored three in the bottom half of the inning on a three-run double by Joe Russo for the 18-8 final score.

The Rivermen are now 14-22 on the season and 13-20 in the GLVC. UMSL will host UWP for a doubleheader on Sunday at GMC Stadium in Sauget, Ill.
