UMSL Splits Doubleheader with USI

Tesson Pitches Complete Game Shutout in First Game

Sauget, Ill. – The Missouri-St. Louis baseball team split a doubleheader with Southern Indiana, winning the first game 3-0 behind the pitching of Matt Tesson, but USI came back to take the second game 10-2.

UMSL grabbed the quick lead in the opening game, scoring twice in the first inning. Josh Morgan walked and moved to third on a base hit by Matt Tesson. Morgan then scored on a double steal and Tesson would come around to score on a wild pitch in the opening inning for the Rivermen. UMSL would add another run in the fifth inning as Morgan was hit by a pitch with two outs and later scored on an error by USI for the 3-0 lead. That was all the run support needed for starting pitcher Matt Tesson, who pitched the complete game shutout. Tesson went the full 7.0 innings, giving up now runs on just two hits and struck out six. He allowed just one USI runner to reach second base in the game.

In the second game, Southern Indiana got on the board first with two runs in the second inning. USI followed with a big third inning, scoring four runs in that frame and added another run in the fourth for a 7-0 lead. UMSL added two runs in the bottom of the sixth, getting an RBI, infield single from Ryan Grooms and a sacrifice fly from Nico Gregali to make it a 7-2 game. USI would add single runs in each of the last three innings and UMSL would muster up an additional run in the bottom of the ninth for the 10-3 final score.

The Rivermen are now 10-16 on the season and 9-14 in the GLVC. UMSL will be on the road Tuesday when they travel to play at Quincy for a doubleheader.
