UMSL Splits Doubleheader with Southern Indiana Neely Knocks Home Winning Run in 12th Inning of Opener Edwardsville, Ill. – The Missouri-St. Louis baseball team split a doubleheader with Southern Indiana, winning the first game 1-0 in the 12th inning, and fell 3-0 in the second game. The opening game was a pitcher’s dual early on, as neither team could get an offense generated. Southern Indiana had bases loaded twice, in the third inning and again in the 11th, but could not get a run across. UMSL did not get a runner to third until the ninth inning with bases loaded, but a double play ended any scoring chances for the Rivermen in that inning. UMSL finally broke through in the 12th, scoring with two outs. Jeff Luksza got a two-out single to right field and Ryan Grooms reached on an error that allowed Luksza to advance to third. Jake Neely then got the game-winning hit with an RBI single to right center field to bring home the game winning run in the 1-0 victory. Joe Russo got the win, pitching 4.1 innings in relief and giving up no runs on three hits. Justin Laramie shut down the USI offense in the early part of the game, going 7.2 innings and giving up no runs on three hits as well. Southern Indiana jumped out quickly in the second game, getting two runs in the first inning and added an unearned run in the second for a 3-0 lead. The USI pitching would hold that lead to the end, limiting UMSL to five hits in the game. UMSL
is now 9-15 on the season and 8-13 in the GLVC. The Rivermen will host
Southern Indiana in a doubleheader on Sunday at GMC Stadium beginning
at 12 pm.
