UMSL Bats Come Alive in Second Game

Rivermen Split Doubleheader with UM-Rolla

Sauget, Ill. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team fumbled away the first game of a doubleheader against Missouri-Rolla, losing 5-1, but the Rivermen bats came alive in the second game to win 7-3.

In the first game, Missouri-Rolla got the first run of the game in the with an unearned run in the first inning and added another unearned run in the sixth. UMSL would cut into that lead on an RBI single by Matt Tesson (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North). The Miners then added three more run in the top of the seventh to for the 5-1 win. UMSL committed four errors in the game, which lead to four unearned runs by the Miners in the loss.

The UMSL bats came alive in the second game, with 12 hits and scoring seven runs in the win. Bryan Smith (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) had an RBI single in the fourth for the first lead of the game. UMR would capitalize on more UMSL errors in the fifth, scoring three unearned runs after three UMSL errors in the inning to take a 3-1 lead. The Rivermen would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer by Matt Tesson. UMSL then grabbed the lead in the sixth with three runs, getting two runs off a UMR error and another on an RBI double by Adam Whitehead (Festus, Mo./Festus). The Rivermen would add an insurance run in the eighth for the 7-3 win. Josh Morgan (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary's) picked up the win in relief, giving up just one hit in 3.1 innings and struck out seven hitters of the ten outs he recorded, including each of the last four hitters he faced. Adam Whitehead had four hits in the second game and Josh Morgan and Scott Lavelock each had three hits.

UMSL is now 5-11 on the season and 4-9 in the GLVC. The Rivermen will be on the road at Indianapolis for two doubleheaders this weekend.
