UMSL Splits Doubleheader, Ends Season with Win

Lantzy Pitching, Soaib Hitting Lead UMSL to Win

St. Louis, Mo. – The UMSL baseball team finished off the season strong, winning the final game of the year 6-0 over SIU Edwardsville in the second game of a doubleheader. The Cougars won the opening game 3-1.

The Rivermen rode the strong pitching arm of Mike Lantzy in the second game. Lantzy pitched the complete game shutout, giving up six hits in nine innings and struck out five. Tony Soaib led UMSL from the plate, going 4-for-4 in the game with two RBIs, knocking in the first two runs of the game. With bases loaded in the fourth inning, Soaib hit a double down the right field line scoring two runs. Mark Sanders knocked in a run on an RBI bunt single and a sacrifice fly made it 4-0 UMSL after four innings. The Rivermen would add two more runs in the sixth on a two-run single by Scott Lavelock for the 6-0 win. In that first game, UMSL got the first lead with a single run in the third inning on an RBI double by Jeff Luksza. The Cougars tied the game in the fourth with a single run, and took the lead with two runs in the sixth inning for the 3-1 win.

The Rivermen end their season with a 20-26 record on the year and finished at 19-24 in the GLVC.
