UMSL Sweeps Doubleheader at UMR Rivermen Bats Explode for 12 Runs in Second Game Rolla, Mo. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team swept a doubleheader at Missouri-Rolla on Wednesday, winning the first game 4-2 and taking the nightcap 12-2. In the first game, the Rivermen got a quick lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Matt Tesson for a 1-0 lead. UMR would come back to tie the game with a single run in the third and the Miners then took the lead in the fifth with another run for a 2-1 advantage. UMSL then won the game in the top of the seventh with three runs, scoring all three runs with two outs. Nico Gregali brought home the first two runs with a two-run double and later scored on an RBI single by Tony Soaib to give UMSL the 4-2 win. Starting pitcher Josh Morgan picked up the win, going 6.0 innings and giving up two runs on four hits, and Mike Lantzy pitched the seventh to pick up his first save of the season. The UMSL bats exploded in the second game, scoring 12 runs in the 12-2 win. It was a scoreless game after five full innings before UMSL came alive in the sixth, scoring eight runs in the inning. The first run scored on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt, and the Rivermen did the rest of the scoring with two outs. Mark Sanders hit a two-run double to left and he later scored on another two-run double, this one from Josh Morgan. Matt Tesson followed with an RBI single to score Morgan. Scott Lavelock then hit the third, two-run double of the inning for UMSL to cap off the scoring barrage. The Miners tried to come back, scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth, but UMSL answered right back with three more runs in the seventh, again scoring all three runs with two outs. Josh Morgan and Matt Tesson each had RBI singles in the inning for the Rivermen. UMSL then added a run in the ninth on an RBI triple by Josh Morgan for the 12-2 win. Joe Russu picked up the win on the mound, going 7.0 innings and giving up two runs on eight hits, while striking out five and walking none. Josh Morgan collected four hits from the plate, scoring twice and knocking in four RBI. UMSL is now 8-14 on the season and 7-12 in the GLVC. The Rivermen host Southern Indiana for a conference doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 12 pm with the games being played at Roy E. Lee field on the campus of SIU Edwardsville.
