UMSL Splits at Conference Leading Rockhurst Rivermen Win Second Game in Extra Innings Kansas City, Mo. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team split a doubleheader at GLVC leading Rockhurst University on Tuesday. The Rivermen lost the first game 2-1, but bounced back to win the second game 7-6 in extra innings. In the opener, Rockhurst got the first run of the game in the third inning for a 1-0 lead. UMSL rallied with two outs in the seventh, getting three straight hits, including an RBI single from Adam Whitehead (Festus, Mo./Festus) to tie it at 1-1. The Hawks would then win the game in the bottom half of the inning on an unearned run for the 2-1 victory. Justin Laramie (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) suffered a tough no decision, going 6.0 innings and giving up just one run on four hits while striking out four. The Rivermen came back strong in the second game and went extra innings for the win. UMSL got on the board quickly with two runs in the top of the first on RBI singles by Matt Tesson (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) and Scott Lavelock (Pleasant Hill, Mo./Pleasant Hill). The Hawks would take the lead with three runs in the third inning but UMSL responded in the fourth. Adam Whitehead scored the first run of the inning on a double steal and Nico Gregali (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) had an RBI single that gave UMSL a 4-3 lead. Rockhurst would tie the game with a single run in the bottom of the fourth and took a 6-4 lead after two more runs in the sixth. UM-St. Louis would tie the game in the seventh with two runs of their own and the game went to the tenth inning to decide the outcome. UMSL got a leadoff single from Tony Soaib (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary's) and later came around to score on a pass ball for a 7-6 UMSL lead. Matt Tesson retired the Hawks hitters in order in the bottom of the tenth to secure the UMSL win and pick up his first victory of the season. Tesson went 5.0 innings in relief, giving up two runs, one earned, on just four hits while striking out three. UMSL is now 2-5 on the season and 2-5 in the GLVC. The Rivermen will be on the road this weekend in Florida. |
