UMSL Completes Weekend Sweep

Rivermen Win Two Extra Inning Games

Romeoville, Ill. – The Missouri-St. Louis baseball team completed a four-game, weekend sweep against Lewis in dramatic fashion, winning twice in extra innings. The Rivermen won the first game 7-5 in 11 innings, then took the second game 5-4 in eight innings.

In the first game, UMSL got single runs in the second and third inning, and Lewis got one run in the second and took a lead with two runs in the fourth. The Rivermen took the lead back with three runs in the top of the fifth as Scott Lavelock, Zach Sheets and Nico Gregali each hit consecutive RBI singles. Lewis came back to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth with two runs to make it 5-5 and force extra innings in the scheduled seven-inning game. The Rivermen won the game in the 11th inning as Zach Sheets hit a two-out, two-run single for the 7-5 win. Josh Morgan picked up the win in relief, going 5.0 innings and giving up no runs on no hits while striking out seven and walking none.

In the second game, also scheduled for seven innings, each team scored three runs in the second inning. Zach Sheets had an RBI single and Tony Soaib had an RBI double in that inning for the Rivermen. Both teams scored in the sixth inning as well with single runs each, forcing a second extra inning game with the team knotted at 4-4. In the eighth, Scott Lavelock led off the inning getting hit by a pitch and came around to score on an RBI single by Matt Tesson for the 5-4 win. Mark Sanders got the win on the mound for his first victory of the season, and Josh Morgan came in to get the save.

The Rivermen are now 19-23 on the season and 18-21 in the GLVC. UMSL will be at home on Tuesday to host Rockhurst for a doubleheader at 1 pm at the UMSL baseball field.
