UMSL Flys Past Lewis in Doubleheader Sweep

Rivermen Get Strong Pitching in Both Games

Romeoville, Ill. – The Missouri-St. Louis baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Lewis Flyers on Saturday, wininng the opening game 5-1 and then won the second game 8-2.

Josh Morgan blasted UMSL to a lead in the first game, hitting a grand slam home run in the fifth inning for a 4-0 Rivermen lead. Lewis would get on the board in the bottom half of the inning, but UMSL came back in the fifth with a run of their own for the 5-1 win. Justin Laramine got the complete game victory, going 7.0 innings and giving up one run on four hits and struck out three.

In the second game, UMSL got a run in the second before Lewis took the lead with two runs in the third inning. UMSL then scored one run in the third, two in the fourth and three in the fifth to open up a solid lead. Scott Lavelock knocked in two runs in the fifth and Adam Whitehead and Josh Morgan each had an RBI single in the sixth to give the Rivermen a 7-2 lead before UMSL added another run in the eighth for the 8-2 win. Mike Lantzy had the complete game win for UMSL on the mound, going 9.0 innings and giving up two runs on nine hits while striking out eight and walking none.

The Rivermen are now 17-23 on the season and 16-21 in the GLVC. UMSL will square off against Lewis for another doubleheader again on Sunday afternoon.
