UMSL Bats Explode for 27 Runs in Sweep

Rivermen Take Doubleheader from Kentucky Wesleyan

Owensboro, Ky. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team swept a doubleheader from Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday, pounding out 27 total runs in the two games.

In the opener, KWC got two runs in the first inning and both teams scored a single run in the second. UMSL scored three runs in the fourth to take the lead, getting a two-run single from Jeff Luksza. Nico Gregali added a two-run single in the fifth for a 6-3 UMSL lead. KWC added a run in the bottom of the fifth but UMSL got a run in the sixth for the 7-4 final score. Matt Tesson got the complete game win for UMSL, going 7.0 innings and giving up four runs on eight hits while striking out four.

The second game was anything by a pitcher's dual, as the two teams combined for 35 runs and 32 hits, with UMSL prevailing 20-15. Each team scored a run in the first and UMSL added three runs in the second innings, two on a triple by Adam Whitehead, while the Panthers got two runs in the bottom of the second for a one-run UMSL lead. The Rivermen then got five runs in both the third and fourth innings. In the third, Whitehead had a two-run single and the Rivermen drew two, bases loaded walks. Four different players knocked in a run in the fifth inning for UMSL, but KWC got three runs in their half of the third and four runs in their half of the fourth inning, leaving UMSL with a 14-10 lead after four innings. UMSL got a single run in the fifth but the Panthers responded with two in the fifth and one in the sixth to make it a two-run UMSL lead at 15-13. The Rivermen opened up the game with another big inning, scoring five more runs in the eighth. Zach Sheets had a two-run double and Ryan Grooms and Scott Lavelock each had RBI singles in the inning. KWC would add two runs in the ninth, but it was not enough as UMSL held on for the 20-15 win.

UMSL is now 13-19 on the season and 12-17 in the GLVC. The Rivermen will host Quincy for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 19, at 12 pm at GMC Stadium in Sauget, Ill.
