UMSL Wins Final Game, Avoids Weekend Sweep Rivermen Beat Indianapolis 6-2 in Series Finale Indianapolis, Ind. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team avoided a weekend sweep by winning 6-2 over Indianapolis in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday. UMSL lost the first game Sunday 3-2 in extra innings, and dropped two games on Saturday afternoon, falling 10-9 in the first game and 14-0 in the second game. In Sunday's second game, UMSL got on the board in the second with an RBI single by Zack Sheets and the Rivermen added two more runs in the third for a 3-0 lead. After Indianapolis scored one run in the bottom of the third, UMSL got RBI singles from Josh Morgan and Nico Gragali in the fourth to extend the lead. Morgan then added a solo homer in the sixth for extra insurance and UIndy scored once in the seventh for the 6-2 final score. Matt Tesson got the complete game win, going 7.0 innings and giving up two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. UMSL dropped the opening game Sunday in extra innings, falling 3-2 to the Greyhounds. The Rivermen scored twice in the second inning, the first run scoring on a balk and Jeff Luksza knocked in the second run for a 2-0 lead. Indianapolis then chipped away at the lead, getting one run in the fifth inning and tied the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh. The Greyhounds then won the game in the eight, scoring the game-winning run in the extra frame. On Saturday, UMSL had the lead through most of the first game before watching Indianapolis rally to win in the last inning. The Rivermen got a run in the first inning for the quick lead but Indianapolis got two in the second for a 2-1 lead. In the third, Adam Whitehead and Josh Morgan both scored on a passed ball to give UMSL the 3-2 lead. The Rivermen then opened a big lead in the fifth inning with four runs. Matt Tesson had a sacrifice fly and Tony Soaib followed with an RBI single. Nico Gregali had an RBI double later in the inning and Bryan Smith finished off the scoring with an RBI single to give UMSL a 7-2 lead. UMSL would add a run in the sixth but the Greyhounds rallied for five runs in the bottom of the inning to make it an 8-7 game. Bryan Smith added another RBI single in the top of the seventh for an insurance run, but Indianapolis scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 10-9 win. The second game was all Greyhounds, as Indianapolis took a 3-0 lead after five innings and then exploded for 11 runs in the sixth for the 14-0 win. UMSL is now 6-14 on the season and 5-12 in the GLVC. The Rivermen will be on the road when they play at Missouri-Rolla on Wednesday.
