UMSL Comes up Short Against Southern Indiana

Rivermen Drop Doubleheader to Screaming Eagles

St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis baseball team dropped a doubleheader to visiting Southern Indiana on Tuesday, losing the first game 8-2 and dropping the second game 7-2.

Southern Indiana took the early lead in the first game with two runs in the third inning, and added to that lead with three more in the fifth inning for a 5-0 lead. After a single run in the sixth and two more in the seventh, USI led 8-0 before UMSL could crack the scoreboard. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, UMSL got a walk and a base hit, followed by a two-run double by Tony Soaib (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary’s) as USI held on for the 8-2 win the opener.

In the second game, UMSL got the first run of the game in the first inning, as Josh Morgan (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary’s) scored without any base hits. After a hit by pitch, Morgan moved to second after an errant throw on a pick off attempt. He moved to third on a pass ball and scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 UMSL lead. USI would tie the game with a single run in the fourth, and took the lead with two runs in the sixth inning for a 3-1 lead. UMSL cut into that lead in the seventh as Mark Sanders (Creve Coeur, Mo./Parkway North) crushed a double to centerfield, and after two walks loaded the bases Adam Whitehead (Festus, Mo./Festus) drew a walk to force Sanders across the plate and made it a 3-2 game. Southern Indiana then exploded with four runs in the top of the ninth for the 7-2 win.

UMSL falls to 15-26 on the season and 7-23 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Rivermen will be on the road this weekend to play at Wisconsin-Parkside.
