UMSL Doubleheader Washed Away by Quincy

Rivermen Drop Two Games to Hawks on Rainy Day

St. Louis, Mo. – The UMSL baseball team lost a doubleheader to visiting Quincy on Wednesday, as the Rivermen fought the Hawks and the weather, losing the first game 2-1 and the second game 7-6.

Quincy got the first two runs in the opener, getting single runs in the fourth and fifth innings for the 2-0 lead. UMSL got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a run of their own. Derek Becker (Prunedale, Calif./North Salinas) got a base hit and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. UMSL faltered a couple of late opportunities in the game, leaving bases loaded in the fifth and again in the bottom of the seventh in the 2-1 loss.

The Rivermen grabbed the early lead in the second game before the Hawks came back to win it late. UMSL scored a run in the first on an RBI single by Colby Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) and added another run in the second, scoring on a throwing error by the Quincy defense. Another error by the Hawks in the third brought home a run, and Derek Becker had an RBI single in the inning to give UMSL the 4-0 lead. The Rivermen added to that lead in the fourth on a solo home run by Josh Morgan (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary’s) for a 5-0 lead. Quincy came back starting in the fifth with three runs to cut into the lead and then took the lead with three more runs in the seventh inning. The Hawks got an insurance run in the top of the ninth for a 7-5 lead as the rain started to fall. Adam Whitehead (Festus, Mo./Festus) led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run that the wind helped push inside the left field foul pole, and with one out the game had a 55-minute rain delay before Quincy got the final out to win 7-6.

UMSL falls to 14-21 on the season and 6-18 in the GLVC. The Rivermen will be on the road this weekend to play at Indianapolis for doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday.
