UMSL Completes Weekend Sweep Over Lewis Rivermen Get Two More Complete Games on Sunday St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis baseball team completed its opening weekend of conference action with a doubleheader sweep of Lewis (2-14, 0-4 GLVC) on Sunday, beating the Flyers 4-1 and 2-1. The Rivermen (12-3, 4-0 GLVC) swept both games on Saturday as well to open the weekend. UMSL got two more complete-game pitching performances, getting complete game wins from Chad Sherman (Mexico, Mo./Mexico) and Dan Kriegshauser (Shrewsbury, Mo./C.B.C.) on Sunday after getting two complete game wins on Saturday. In the first game, Lewis got on the board with and RBI single in the first inning off UMSL starter Chad Sherman for the quick 1-0 lead. The Rivermen would strike back in the second inning to take the lead. Mark Sanders (Creve Coeur, Mo./Parkway North) and Josh Thomas (Pevely, Mo./Herculaneum) each had RBI singles in the inning for UMSL. The Rivermen added an insurance run in the third, but that was more than enough for Sherman, who gave up one run on five hits and struck out two in seven innings of work for the win. The second game was another pitcher’s dual, as UMSL starter Dan Kriegshauser pitched a nine-inning, complete game, giving up just one run on six hits and striking out four. The Rivermen got on the scoreboard in the third inning with a pair of runs. Josh Thomas led off with a walk and Josh Morgan (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary’s) followed with a single to center. Two outs later, Colby Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) crushed a double to centerfield, scoring both runners for a 2-0 UMSL lead. Lewis cut the lead in half in the fifth with a two out, RBI single to make it a 2-1 game, but Kriegshauser shut the Flyers down after that. Lewis tried to rally in the later innings, including a leadoff single in the eighth down the left field line by Brian Clancy, but UMSL leftfielder Mark Sanders cut the ball off and fired a perfect throw into second to nail Clancy trying to stretch it to a double. That play deflated any hopes for a Lewis comeback as UMSL held on for the 2-1 win. Pitching was the story of the day as UMSL got two more complete game pitching performances after two complete games on Saturday. Chad Sherman and Dan Kriegshauser combined to give up just two runs on 11 hits in 16 innings worth of work on Sunday. Josh Morgan had three hits on the day at the plate and Colby Hughes had two hits, one run and two RBI on the day. UMSL
will be at home again next weekend when they host Upper Iowa University
for a single game on Friday at 2 pm, and a doubleheader on Saturday
at 12 noon.
