UMSL Ends Season with Loss to Saint Joseph's

Rivermen Swept in Doubleheader by Pumas

St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis baseball team was swept by GLVC regular season champion Saint Joseph’s on Sunday, falling 5-2 in the opener and losing 15-5 in the final game of the year for the Rivermen.

In the first game, UMSL got two runs in the third for a quick lead. Josh Morgan (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary’s) had an RBI single to start the scoring and Adam Whitehead (Festus, Mo./Festus) followed with an RBI single of his own to make it 2-0. Saint Joseph’s came right back and tied the score with two runs in the fourth, and then took the lead in the fifth with two more runs. The Pumas added an insurance run in the seventh for the 5-2 win. UMSL started Steven McCoy (Potosi, Mo./Potosi) went 6.1 innings and gave up four runs on eight hits and struck out five.

The second game saw the Pumas sprint out to a quick lead and never looked back. Saint Joseph’s got three runs in both the second and third innings for a 6-0 lead. The Rivermen got on the board in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Colby Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) and an RBI single by Derek Becker (Prunedale, Calif., North Salinas) to make it 6-2. Saint Joseph’s added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and added four more in the seventh. UMSL got an RBI single from Colby Hughes in the seventh, and after three more Saint Joseph’s runs in the top of the eighth, UMSL got two more runs in the bottom half of the inning for the 15-5 final score.

UMSL ends its season with an overall record of 18-33 on the year and a 10-30 record in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
