UMSL Splits with League-Leading Rangers Rivermen Split Doubleheader at Wisconsin-Parkside Kenosha, Wis. – The Missouri-St. Louis baseball team took the opening game of a doubleheader at GLVC leading Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday, winning the first game 6-4 before losing the second game 20-6. UMSL grabbed the quick lead in the opening game and held off a late UWP rally for the 6-4 win. Colby Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) got UMSL on the board in the first inning with an RBI single and the Rivermen added an unearned run in the second inning for a 2-0 lead. Colby Hughes and Tom Anderson (Bridgeton, Mo./Hazelwood West) both scored unearned runs in the third inning to give UMSL a 4-0 lead. Wisconsin-Parkside got on the board in the bottom of the third with two runs off starter Blake Burnside (Cardwell, Mo./Southland) to cut the lead in half. The Rivermen added two important insurance runs with an RBI single from Tom Anderson in the fifth and a sacrifice fly by Colby Hughes in the sixth. The Rangers got two runs in the bottom half of the last inning, but Josh Morgan (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary’s) got the final two hitters on a strikeout and ground out to record the save. Blake Burnside picked up the win, going 6.0 innings and giving up two unearned runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking just one. The second game saw the Rangers grabbed a big lead early and the Rivermen could never catch up, losing 20-6. UMSL got the first run of the game with an RBI double by Tom Anderson in the top of the first, but the Rangers exploded in the bottom half of the inning. UWP got hits from each of the first five hitters, and got nine hits and nine runs total in the opening frame to take a 9-1 lead. The Rangers added another run in the second and four more runs in the third inning to blow the game open at 14-1 after three innings. UMSL got two runs in the sixth on an RBI single from Josh Morgan and an RBI triple by Colby Hughes, but UWP got two more of their own in the bottom half of the inning. After another UWP run in the seventh, UMSL got three runs in the eighth, including an RBI single from Colby Hughes, but the Rangers again responded with three of their own for the 20-6 win. Mike Lantzy (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) went 6.2 innings for UMSL and suffered the loss to fall to 4-7 on the season. UMSL is now 16-29 on the season and 8-26 in the GLVC. The Rivermen will play a midweek game on Wednesday, May 4, at SIU Edwardsville before wrapping up the regular season with a four-game series next weekend against Saint Joseph’s.
