Southern Indiana Sweeps Rivermen UMSL Loses Doubleheader to Screaming Eagles Evansville, Ind. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at Southern Indiana on Wednesday afternoon, falling 5-0 in the first game and 4-3 in the second game. UMSL was held scoreless in the opener, managing just one hit in the game. After leadoff walk in the top of the first, UMSL saw 15 straight hitters retired before another leadoff walk in the sixth inning, followed by the only hit of the day for the Rivermen by Josh Thomas (Pevely, Mo./Herculaneum) to break up the no hit bid. Southern Indiana managed four runs in the third inning and another run in the sixth for the 5-0 win. In the second game, the Screaming Eagles scored a single run in the fourth inning for the first lead. UMSL tied the game in the top of the sixth as Matt Rose (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) hit a one out triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Colby Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson). USI came right back with a run in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead, and added two more runs in the seventh for a 4-1 lead. UMSL would chip away at that lead, getting a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Derek Becker (Prunedale, Calif./North Salinas). In the ninth inning, UMSL tried to put together a two-out rally as Josh Morgan (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary's) got a two-out single and scored on an RBI double by Adam Whitehead (Festus, Mo./Festus), but USI closed out the game with a strikeout for the 4-3 win. Missouri-St.
Louis falls to 10-8 on the season and 5-7 in the Great Lakes Valley
Conference. UMSL will be on the road this weekend as they travel to
play at Bellarmine for doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
