UMSL Sweeps Doublheader at SIUE

UMSL Bats Explode with 6-run Inning in Second Game

Edwardsville, Ill. – The Missouri-St. Louis baseball team swept a doubleheader from SIU Edwardsville in GLVC action on Wednesday. The Rivermen won the opener 6-1 and used a six-run inning in the second game to win 13-7.

UMSL rode the pitching arm of Steven McCoy (Potosi, Mo./Potosi) in the first game. McCoy got the complete game win, going 7.0 innings and giving up one run on six hits. The offense got a quick lead with two runs in the first inning, one coming on an RBI single by Derek Becker (Prunedale, Calif./Prunedale). SIUE scored thier only run in the second inning, but UMSL got two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. The Rivermen got an RBI single from Adam Whitehead (Festus, Mo./Festus) in the fifth and got RBI singles from Scott Lavelock (Pleasant Hill, Mo./Pleasant Hill) and Josh Morgan (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary's) for the 6-1 win.

The second game was an offensive battle, with UMSL using a six-run sixth inning to take control. The Rivermen got an RBI hit from Tom Anderson (Bridgeton, Mo./Hazelwood West) in the first inning and an RBI double from Anderson in the third who later scored on a sacrifice for a 3-0 UMSL lead. SIUE then score five runs in the bottom of the third to take a two-run lead. UMSL got a single run in the fourth and the Cougars responded with a run of their own in the fifth to hold a 6-4 lead. The Rivermen then exploded for six runs in the top of the sixth to take control of the game. Josh Morgan got the scoring started with a one-out triple and then came home on a balk. Two batters later, Colby Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) had an RBI double and scored on an infield hit by Scott Lavelock. Josh Thomas (Pevely, Mo./Herculaneum) then got a two-run single with bases loaded and Matt Rose (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) added another RBI single for a 10-6 UMSL lead. SIUE would get one run in the bottom half of the inning but the Rivermen an RBI single from Rose and an RBI double from Morgan in the eighth and scored three runs in that inning for the 13-7 win. Dan Kriegshauser (Shrewbury, Mo./C.B.C.) picked up the win in relief, going 2.1 innings and giving up one run on three hits.

UMSL is now 18-29 on the season and 10-26 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Rivermen will wrap up their season this weekend with a home doubleheader at 12 noon on Saturday and Sunday against league-leading Saint Joseph's.
