UMSL Stumbles at Kentucky Wesleyan Rivermen Swept by Panthers Owensboro, Ky. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis dropped a doubleheader at Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday, losing the first game 10-0 and dropping the second game 9-5. The Rivermen were shutout for the first time this season in the opener, losing 10-0. Kentucky Wesleyan jumped out quickly, getting three runs in the second inning and five runs in the third. The Panthers added two runs in the fifth inning as UMSL was held to just one hit in the game, and were struck out nine times. In the second game, UMSL got the first run of the game in the opening inning as Colby Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) had an RBI double. Kentucky Wesleyan took the lead in the second with two runs of their own, and added to that with four runs in the fifth inning. The Panthers would add to their lead with three more runs in the bottom of the eighth before UMSL made it interesting in the top of the ninth. The Rivermen scored four runs in the final inning, getting and RBI double by Scott Lavelock (Pleasant Hill, Mo./Pleasant Hill) to start the scoring. Josh Thomas (Pevely, Mo./Heculaneum) knocked in another run and Matt Rose (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) had an RBI double in the inning as well, but the rally came up short as UMSL lost 9-5. Missouri-St.
Louis falls to 10-6 on the season and 5-5 in the Great Lakes Valley
Conference. UMSL will be at Southern Indiana on Wednesday for a doubleheader
before traveling to play at Bellarmine next weekend.
