UMSL Splits at Kentucky Wesleyan

Rivermen Come Back to Win Second Game

Owensboro, Ky. – The Missouri-St. Louis baseball team split a doubleheader at Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday, dropping the first game 3-2 before coming back to win the second game by that same 3-2 score.

Kentucky Wesleyan got the early lead in the first game with a single run on the second inning before the Rivermen came back with two runs in the top of the third. Matt Rose (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) brought in both runs with a two-run single that gave UMSL the 2-1 lead. In the fourth inning, the Panthers retook the lead with two runs of their own and held on for the 3-2 win.

In the second game, UMSL got on the board with a single run in the top of the first inning. Kentucky Wesleyan game right back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning off UMSL starter Chad Sherman (Mexico, Mo./Mexico) to take the lead. The Rivermen came back to retake the lead in the third inning with two runs of their own. Josh Thomas (Pevely, Mo./Herculaneum) reached base, stole second and moved to third on a base hit by Adam Whitehead (Festus, Mo./Festus). UMSL then got a double steal, as Whitehead moved to second and Thomas came in to score and tie the game. Colby Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) brought Whitehead home for the go ahead run with an RBI single to give UMSL the 3-2 win. Chad Sherman settled down after that first inning when he gave up two runs on four straight hits, and held the Panthers to just one hit over the final eight innings. He improved to 2-1 on the season, going 9.0 innings and giving up two runs on five hits and struck out seven.

Missouri-St. Louis is now 10-4 on the season and is 5-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Rivermen will be at Kentucky Wesleyan again on Sunday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
