UMSL Splits Doubleheader at Bellarmine Rivermen Win Opening Game 7-5 Louisville, Ky. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team split a doubleheader at Bellarmine on Sunday afternoon, winning the opening game 7-5 and losing the second game 1-0. In the opener, UMSL got on the board first with four runs in the third inning. Derek Becker (Prunedale, Calif./North Salinas) had an RBI single and Matt Rose (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) had a two-run double in the inning as well. UMSL added a run in the fourth and after Bellarmine scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, Colby Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) had an RBI double in the sixth for an insurance run. The Knights added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Rivermen got yet another insurance run in the seventh for the 7-5 win. In the second game, Bellarmine got a run in the bottom of the first inning, as three of the first four hitters all got hits, for a quick 1-0 lead. That was all the offense that Bellarmine needed, and all they would get the rest of the game. After the Knights cleanup hitter picked up the RBI double in the bottom of the first, UMSL pitcher Mike Lantzy (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) shut down Bellarmine. Lantzy limited the Knights to just one hit the rest of the game, including retiring the final 11 hitters of the game. Lantzy went 8.0 innings and gave up one run on four hits, struck out five and walked one. Unfortunatly, the UMSL offense could not get any runs on the board with their seven hits in the game in a 1-0 loss. Missouri-St.
Louis is now 11-11 on the season and 6-10 in the Great Lakes Valley
Conference. The Rivermen will be at home for the next several games,
hosting SIU Edwardsville on Tuesday at 2 pm, and the hosting Northern
Kentucky this upcoming weekend.
