UMSL Scores Early to Sweep Doubleheader Rivermen Score Seven Total Runs in First Innings St. Louis, Mo. – The UMSL baseball team scored a total of seven runs in the first innings of the doubleheader against Southern Indiana, winning 5-3 in the first game and 10-3 in the second game. In the opener, UMSL got on the board quickly with three runs in the first inning, as each of the first five hitters got a base hit. Jonathan Mercer (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) had an RBI double and Logan Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) had a two-run single in the inning. Southern Indiana added an unearned run in the second inning, but UMSL came back with a single run in the third on an RBI hit by Mike Wulff (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West). USI fought back with two runs in the fifth, but UMSL got another RBI base hit from Tony Grana (Ballwin, Mo./Lafayette) in the sixth for the 5-3 win. Steven McCoy (Potosi, Mo./Potosi) got the complete game win, giving up three runs, one earned, on seven hits and struck out seven. The Rivermen got on the board quickly again in the second game, as five of the first six hitters reached base safely. Logan Hughes had an RBI single and Josh Morgan (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary’s) had a two-run double as UMSL scored four times in the first inning for a 4-0 lead. Southern Indiana got on the board with a single run in the second inning, but the Rivermen came back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Colby Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) then added two more runs for UMSL in the third with a two-run home run, his third of the season. Southern Indiana would add singles runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, but UMSL came right back with a run in the sixth and seventh innings as Scott Davis (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) had an RBI single in the sixth and Scott Sanders (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) had an RBI single in the seventh for the 10-3 win. Jonathan Pate (Wildwood, Mo./Eureka) got the win, going 5.1 innings and giving up three runs, one earned, on five hits. The Rivermen are now 26-19-1 on the season
and 21-11 in the GLVC. UMSL will be at home this weekend for a big four-game
series with league leading Wisconsin-Parkside. The Rivermen will host
Parkside for a doubleheader on both Saturday and Sunday, beginning at
12 noon each day.
