Sanders Named GLVC Player of the Week First Baseman Knocked in Game Winning Run in 13th-Inning St. Louis, Mo. – UMSL senior first baseman Scott Sanders (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) was named Player of the Week by the Great Lakes Valley Conference, becoming the first Rivermen player to earn that honor this season. Sanders helped lead UMSL to a 4-2 record last week, including three wins in a big four-game series this weekend against Kentucky Wesleyan. Sanders hit .423 on the week, going 11-for-26 with eight runs scored, six doubles and six RBIs. He had a slugging percentage of .654 on the week and an on base percentage of .483. Sanders bat came alive in the weekend series against Kentucky Wesleyan, helping UMSL win three of four from the Panthers. In Saturday’s doubleheader, he went 1-for-3 with two runs scored in the 11-2 win in game one. In the second game, he went 4-for-6 with two runs and two RBIs in a 15-4 win. In addition, Sanders tied a school record with three doubles in one game. Sunday he came through in the clutch for UMSL in a 16-15 victory in a 13-inning game against Kentucky Wesleyan. Sanders went 2-for-7 in the game, getting both his hits in clutch situations. In the bottom of the ninth, with UMSL trailing by four runs, Sanders belted a two-run double and later scored in the inning to ignite an UMSL rally that tied the score and sent the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the 13th, he came through again, sending a base hit down the right field line with bases loaded to bring home the game-winning run. On the season, Sanders leads the Rivermen in hitting with a .379 average, is second on the team with 10 doubles and has 26 runs scored and 20 RBIs on the year. Sanders
and the Rivermen will be in action at home on Wednesday, April 7, when
they host local rival SIU Edwardsville for a doubleheader at UMSL’s
field beginning at 12 noon.
