Hughes Named GLVC Baseball Scholar Athlete of the Year

Senior Third Baseman Wins Award for Second Straight Year

St. Louis, Mo. – Missouri-St. Louis baseball player Logan Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Baseball Scholar Athlete of the Year. This marked the second consecutive year Hughes has been named the recipient of this award.

Hughes has received numerous awards this season, capped off by this latest honor. Earlier this spring, Hughes was named a co-recipient of the GLVC Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award, given annually to a male and female student-athlete in the GLVC for their athletic performance, academic achievements, character and leadership. He became the first UMSL student-athlete to receive this prestigious award. Hughes is a two-time Academic All-Conference selection and this year was named an Academic All-District First Team selection.

On the field, Hughes earned GLVC Second Team All-Conference honors and was a Second Team North Central Region selection as a third baseman. He started in all 54 games for the Rivermen and was third on the team with a .345 batting average, collecting a team-high 70 hits on the year. He tied the UMSL single season record for most RBIs with 56, a record he matched the previous season, and in just two years moved into sixth on the UMSL career records list with 112 RBIs. He led the team with six home runs on the year and collected 13 doubles, giving him 34 doubles on his career which is seventh in the UMSL career records.

In the classroom, Hughes majored in physical education and held a cumulative grade point average of 3.83. Hughes became just the second UMSL student-athlete to be named GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year during the 2003 season, and this year became the first UMSL student-athlete to receive the award twice.
