UMSL Faces Quincy in First Round of GLVC Tournament

St. Louis, Mo. – The UMSL baseball team finished the regular season in third place in the GLVC standings and will open up against the fourth-seeded Quincy Hawks in the first round of the 2004 GLVC Baseball Tournament. Game time for the UMSL-Quincy game will be 7 pm, at GMC Stadium in Sauget, Ill., home of the Gateway Grizzlies minor league team.

UMSL has won seven of its last ten games heading into the tournament, while Quincy has won four straight and five of their last six games. These two teams faced each other four times during the regular season, with the Hawks winning three of those four games. In the two games at Quincy, the Hawks won the first game 6-5 in 13 innings and then won the second game 9-1. In the doubleheader at UMSL, the Rivermen got a strong pitching performance from Brad Drewes (St. Louis, Mo.) to win the opening game 3-1, but the Hawks won the second game 13-9.

UMSL is led this year in hitting by shortstop Scott Davis (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) with a .376 batting average, including a .436 average in conference games. Jonathan Mercer (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) is hitting .359 on the season and leads the team with 54 runs scored, 17 doubles and three triples. He is second on the team with 66 hits and 47 RBIs. Logan Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) is hitting .358 on the year with a team best 67 hits and 54 RBIs. He needs just three more RBIs to break the school single season record for RBIs in a season that he set last year with 56 RBIs. Brad Drewes leads the team on the mound with a 7-2 record and a 3.05 ERA and has 48 strikeouts on the year.

Other first round games for the tournament feature third-seeded Northern Kentucky against fifth-seeded Saint Joseph’s at 1 pm, and top-seeded Wisconsin-Parkside against sixth-seed Kentucky Wesleyan at 4 pm.

This year’s GLVC Tournament will be held at a neutral location for the first time, and will be played at GMC Stadium in Sauget, Ill., the home of the Frontier League Gateway Grizzles. The four-day, six-team tournament will begin on Thursday, May 6th, with three games being played, the first beginning at 1:00 p.m., followed by a 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. contest. There will also be three games played on Friday and three games played on Saturday. Sunday will feature the GLVC Championship game at noon, with a second game reserved for 3:00 p.m. should it be necessary.

Ticket prices for the tournament run $10.00 for an adult day ticket on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and $8.00 for Sunday's game(s). Students, with identification, will pay $5.00 a day and $3.00 on Sunday. A youth ticket (K-12) will also cost $5.00 a day and $3.00 on Sunday. Children five and under will be allowed in for free each day. A tournament pass may also be purchased for $20.00 and is good for every game of the tournament.
