UMSL Beats KWC, Stays Alive in GLVC Tournament Drewes Pitches UMSL to Win; Rivermen Play Wis-Parkside Sat. at 4 pm Sauget, Ill. – The Missouri-St. Louis baseball team defeated Kentucky Wesleyan 6-1 on Friday in the GLVC Baseball Tournament at GMC Stadium in Sauget, Ill. UMSL rode the strong pitching performance of Brad Drewes (St. Louis, Mo.) who threw a complete game, three-hitter in the win to improve to 8-2 on the season. The Rivermen got on the board in the third with two runs. Scott Sanders (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) and Jonathan Mercer (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) each got two out singles and Logan Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) followed with a two-run double to right center for a 2-0 UMSL lead. In the fifth, Tony Grana (Ballwin, Mo./Lafayette) led off with a double down the right field line and Scott Sanders followed with an RBI double down the line to make it 3-0. Kentucky Wesleyan would break through and get on the board with single run in the bottom half of the inning but the Rivermen would answer right back with a run of their own. Doug Wiles (Farmington, Mo./Farmington) got an RBI double that brought home Scott Davis (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) and push the lead back to three runs at 4-1. UMSL would add another run in the eighth as Doug Wiles moved to third on a fly ball to center and came home to score on a throwing error on the play to give the Rivermen a 5-1 lead. UMSL continued to add insurance runs with a run in the ninth on an RBI infield single by Josh Morgan (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary’s). That was all the run support needed for starting pitcher Brad Drewes, who went 9.0 innings and gave up one run and just three hits while walking two and stricking out three. UMSL is now 29-22-1 on the season and stay alive in the GLVC Tournament. The Rivermen advance in the tournament and will face regular season champion Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday afternoon at 4 pm at GMC Stadium in Sauget, Ill. In the first game of the day, Wisconsin-Parkside got a complete game shutout from starting pitcher Matt Anderson to defeat Saint Joseph’s College 5-0. Anderon gave up no runs on five hits and struck out four in the win. The Rangers got two runs in both the third and fifth innings and one more in the seventh inning. Jim Healy went 3-for-5 with three runs and Andy Garms was 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs to lead the UWP offense.
