UMSL Falls to Hawks in Opening Round Rivermen Face Kentucky Wesleyan at 4 pm on Friday Sauget, Ill. – The UMSL baseball team dropped their first round game at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, falling to Quincy 6-3 out at GMC Stadium in Sauget, Ill. Quincy jumped out to a big lead, scoring six runs in the second inning, getting a two-run double from Tim Seago and a two-run triple by Jamie Simmons in the inning. UMSL would get on the board in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Pat McNichols (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway West) that scored Josh Morgan (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary’s) to make it 6-1. The score remained the same until the seventh when UMSL got an RBI single by Josh Morgan to cut the deficit to four runs at 6-2. The Rivermen would add another run in the eighth when Colby Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) went to third on a base hit by Tony Grana (Ballwin, Mo./Lafayette) and Hughes came around to score after a throwing error on the play to make it a 6-3 game after eight innings, but the Hawks would hold that lead and win the game 6-3. With the loss, UMSL falls to 28-22-1 on the season and will play in the second round against Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday at 4 pm. In other first round action at the GLVC Tournament, sixth seeded Kentucky Wesleyan upset the top seed Wisconsin-Parkside, winning 3-2. The Panthers got two runs in the top of the ninth to break a 1-1 tie as John Grana knocked in the go ahead run with an RBI single. KWC then held off a Rangers rally in the bottom of the ninth as Cory Wade got the final three outs to pick up his first save of the season. Northern
Kentucky, the two seed in the tournament, defeated fifth-seeded Saint
Joseph’s in the first game of the day, winning 5-3. Jerrod Fraley
was 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Norse in the win, including a two-run
home run in the third inning. GLVC Pitcher of the Year Derrick Moeves
picked up the win for NKU, improving his record to 7-3 on the season.
