No Joke, UMSL Splits Another Doubleheader

Rivermen Split Fourth Straight Doubleheader

St. Louis, Mo. – The UMSL baseball team split their fourth straight doubleheader, getting a win and a loss at SIU Edwardsville on Thursday afternoon. UMSL took the win in the opener 4-2, but dropped the second game 2-1.

The Cougars got the first lead of the game in the opener, scoring twice in the bottom of the first. The Rivermen came back and rallied in the top of the third with four runs to take the lead for good. Colby Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly and Doug Wiles (Farmington, Mo./Farmington) followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. The UMSL rally wasn’t done however, as Scott Miller (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) knocked in the go ahead run with an RBI single and then added a fourth run for the 4-2 lead. Blake Burnside (Cardwell, Mo./Southland) picked up the win, going 6.0 innings and giving up two runs on four hits, but allowed just one hit after the first inning while getting his first win of the season. Colby Hughes came on to pitch the seventh and pick up his fourth save of the season.

In the second game, UMSL would get on the board in the top half of the first inning for a quick lead when Scott Sanders (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) scored on an infield groundout for a 1-0 lead. SIUE came back in the third and tied the game with a single run to make it 1-1. The Cougars then claimed the lead in the next inning, getting a sacrifice fly to plate the winning run and held on for the 2-1 victory.

The Rivermen are now 12-15-1 on the season and remain even in conference play with a 7-7 record in the GLVC. UMSL will be at home this weekend, hosting Kentucky Wesleyan for a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 noon, and again on Sunday at 12 noon.
