UMSL Splits Doubleheader at Northern Kentucky

Rivermen Win 4-2 in First Game

Highland Heights, Ky. – The UMSL baseball team split a road doubleheader at Northern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon, winning the opening game 4-2 before falling in the second game 10-4.

In the first game, UMSL got on the board quickly with two runs in the top of the first inning. Northern Kentucky would come right back and get one run in the bottom of the first and added a second run in the third inning to tie the game at 2-2. The Rivermen would retake the lead in the fifth with two runs. Brad Drews (St. Louis, Mo.) picked up the win for UMSL to improve to 2-0 on the season. Drews went 7.0 innings and gave up two runs on six hits and struck out seven. Tony Grana (Ballwin, Mo./Lafayette) went 2-for-4 in the game with one run and two RBIs, including his team leading fourth home run of the season, and Jonathan Mercer (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) went 3-for-3 in the game with one run and one RBI.

In the nightcap, Northern Kentucky scored early and often against Rivermen starter Matt Kueny (Boonville, Mo./Boonville). The Norse scored one in the first inning, twice in the second and once again in the third for a quick 4-0 lead. UMSL would get on the board in the top of the third with a single run, but NKU came right back with two more in the bottom half of the inning. Northern Kentucky then added one in the fifth, two more in the sixth and another run in the seventh, as the Norse scored in each of the first seven innings. The Rivermen continued to battle at the plate and added three more in the ninth inning before falling 10-4. Kueny suffered the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings and fell to 1-4 on the year. Scott Sanders (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) went 3-for-4 in the second game with one run and Doug Wiles (Farmington, Mo./Farmington) was 1-for-4 with one run and two RBIs.

UMSL is now 9-12-1 on the season and 4-4 in the GLVC. The Rivermen will play another doubleheader at Northern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon beginning at 12 noon.
