UMSL Wins First Game; Loses Second in 13 Innings

Rivermen Play Third, 13-Inning Game of the Season

Romeoville, Ill. – The UMSL baseball team split a doubleheader at Lewis on Friday afternoon, winning the first game 4-1, then losing in the second game 6-5 in 13 innings. It was the third, 13-inning game UMSL has played this season.

In the opening game, Lewis got on the board first, with a single run in the second inning of UMSL starter Brad Drewes (St. Louis, Mo.). Drewes pitched another stellar game for the Rivermen, getting the complete game win by going 7.0 innings and giving up just one run on only three hits with nine strikeouts. Two of the three hits allowed to the Flyers came in that second inning when they scored the run. With the win, Drewes improves to 5-0 on the season. The UMSL offense would come to life late in the game, scoring two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, UMSL scored the first run on a wild pitch and then got a sacrifice fly from Colby Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) to give the Rivermen a 2-1 lead. UMSL got another run off a wild pitch in the seventh, and then scored again later in the inning on an RBI single from Josh Morgan (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary's) for the 4-1 victory.

The second game was another marathon for the Rivermen, as Lewis held out for a 6-5 win in 13 innings. UMSL got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first, one coming from an RBI single by Logan Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson). Lewis would come back to score once in the bottom half of the inning and added another run in the third off UMSL starter Mike Lantzy (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North), to make it a 2-2 game. Lantzy would pitch 6.2 innings in the no decision, giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits and struck out four.

UMSL would take the lead again in the seventh, scoring a run off a wild pitch, and the Rivermen then added two more runs in the top of the eighth. For the fourth time of the day, UMSL scored after a wild pitch for the first run of the inning, then got an RBI single from Scott Davis (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) and led the game 5-2. The Flyers came fighting back, scoring one run in the bottom of the eighth, then got two RBI doubles in the ninth to tie the game at 5-5, sending it to extra innings. Each team had a couple chances early in the extra frames, as Lewis left bases loaded in the 10th, and UMSL left bases loaded in the top of the 11th. The Rivermen left two more on base in the top of the 13th, and the Flyers then broke through in the bottom of the 13th, getting a sacrifice fly with bases loaded for the 6-5 win.

It was the third, 13-inning game this season for the Rivermen. Earlier this year, UMSL lost a 13-inning game 6-5 at Quincy, and won a 16-15, 13-inning game at home against Kentucky Wesleyan.

The Rivermen are now 18-17-1 on the season and 13-9 in the GLVC. UMSL will play another doubleheader at Lewis on Saturday afternoon beginning at 12 noon.
